Italian Venere or Black Rice

Catalog Number: 65040
Vendor: Cascina Belvedere
$4.99
A true black rice, from the Chinese Emperors table to yours...Smells like a cross between sandal-wood and just baked bread. Aphrodisiac...I'll get back to you. Obtained from the combination of an old and particular variety of Chinese rice, which was appreciated at the court of ancient Chinese emperors for its nutritional and aphrodisiac properties, (from which the name forbidden rice derives), today it is grown in particular areas of Italy's Po valley. Venere rice boasts extraordinary nutritional properties: rich in fiber and phosphorus, it also contains such minerals as calcium, iron, zinc, and selenium. This whole meal rice is pleasantly aromatic, and when it is cooked (which takes 40 minutes), it releases a particular aroma midway between sandalwood and just-baked bread. It owes its naturally black color to the particular pigmentation of the pericarp (the light skin that covers the grain), while the inside of the grain is white like in all other rice varieties. After cooking, the grain maintains its compactness, and is well separated. It is ideal as a side-dish to meat or fish; it can be simply boiled in salt water and seasoned with oil or butter, or cooked as pilaf. 1.1 lb. Imported.

My hubby and I weren't sure what we were going to get, but we are adventuresome. Very pleased! Great flavor (unique, not too strong) and texture. Cooking instructions were not clear. So we used standard 1 cup rice to 2 cup water and it worked well.Looking forward to finishing the rice with a good grill-cooked veggie dinner soon!
