Ricciarelli Sienese Almond Cookie (9oz.)
Ricciarelli Sienese Almond Cookie (9oz.)

Catalog Number: 51505
Vendor: Le Dolcezze Di Nanni
New $11.25 "Ricciarelli " are classic orange-laced Sienese almond paste cookies originating in the Tuscan city of Siena dating back to the 14th century.
Once a Christmas delight, but are now enjoyed year-round, these delightfully moist little almond cookies come from a centuries old Italian recipe. Legend holds that they were introduced by Ricciardetto della Gherardesca in his castle near Volterra upon his return from the Crusades. The "Riccarelli" are shaped like the almond eyes of Madonnas by Renaissance painters.

These cookies are made using an almond paste called "marzapane" with sugar, honey and egg white. Prepared in the traditional method, the almonds are ground with a milling machine to make the "marzapane" and the finished mix is formed into numerous oval-shaped cookies that are set aside for two days before baking. The rough and crackled surface is then lightly sprinkled with confectioner's sugar. Serve with a lovely rich dessert wine, like "Vin Santo" from Tuscany, a "Recioto" from Verona, a "Brachetto" from Piedmont or a "Passito di Pantelleria" from Sicily and you will be in heaven!
