The terms “appetizers” and “hors d’oeuvres” have come to be used almost interchangeably, although traditionally they are not quite the same.
An appetizer is usually served at the table as the beginning of the meal. Hors d’oeuvres on the other hand, in French means “outside the meal (or work),” and can be served buffet style or passed on trays. Such dishes can be served hot or cold, elaborate or very simple.
“Starters” is a fairly new term showing up on American menus that reflect the more relaxed and informal nature of many popular restaurants.
“Snacks” usually mean small amounts of food enjoyed in between or instead of a regular meal.
We have a little bit of everything.
