1955 Chocolate Ice Box Pie

A retro treat from over 50 years ago.  Yes, it is made with packaged pudding and yes, I will always really love it.  It was the first dish that my mother made with chocolate that I actually liked.

Ingredients

Items indicated with an astrisk (*) available for purchase in the Avanti Savoia store.

  • 1 package Graham crackers, mashed into crumbs
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla powder *
  • 1/2 cup Butter, melted
  • 1 3.4 ounce package Jello Chocolate Cook and Serve Pie Filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon *
  • 1/2 pint Whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla powder *
  • Grated chocolate

Instructions

Graham Cracker Crust:

  • 1 package Graham crackers, mashed into crumbs
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/2 cup Butter, melted
  1. Combine crumbs, sugar, and vanilla and stir in melted butter.
  2. Blend thoroughly and press into a 9" pie pan.
  3. Bake in 350 degree oven for 10 minutes and cool.

 

Pie Filling:

  • 1 3.4 ounce package Jello Chocolate Cook and Serve Pie Filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
  1. Follow package instructions with the addition of the cinnamon and pour into cooled crumb crust.
  2. Place in refrigerator 1 hour or longer.

 

Pie Topping:

  • 1/2 pint Whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • Grated chocolate
  1. Whip cream with sugar and vanilla and spread on top of cooled pie.
  2. Decorate with a little grated chocolate.
